By the end of the third quarter last Saturday in a boys basket=
ball
game against Dublin Coffman, a raucous Scioto High School student section h=
ad
erupted with chants of, "Why so quiet?"
The Irish had amassed a 16-point lead, leaving the Shamrocks'
student section with little to brag about and Coffman coach Jamey Collins
wondering if it could get any worse.
"They played the game the way you're supposed to play
it," Collins said. "They executed better in a big game and that's=
it.
You can check the records, but I know it's been at least six years since we=
've
had a score like this. They got us every which way."
Scioto used its defense to dismantle the Shamrocks 51-32, two =
days
after beating Jerome 72-42, handing the Celtics their worst loss.
The Irish took the Battle of Dublin for the second consecutive
season and remained unbeaten in the process at 8-0 overall before playing
Watterson last Wednesday. Coffman and Jerome each dropped to 5-3.
"We were up for both of these games and we just wanted to
come out with a lot of intensity," Scioto guard Ben Ashwill said. &quo=
t;We
knew if we came out with a lot of intensity then our offense would be a res=
ult
of that. But that's what we try to do every game."
Scioto used a 7-0 run to close the first half against the
Shamrocks with a 22-15 lead. It put together another run with a number of
layups and open shots to win the third quarter 17-8.
Blair Gorniak led three Irish players in double figures with 12
points.
Coffman totaled just four assists for the game.
"That's a tough team to hold to 32 points," Scioto c=
oach
Tony Bisutti said. "I've really liked our defensive execution, and, you
know, it's been hard, too, because when you're winning by 30 and we're watc=
hing
45 minutes of film and I tell them I don't like the defense that's a hard s=
ell
for most guys. But these guys want to be coached."
Against Jerome, the Irish took an 18-7 lead in the first quart=
er
as Bradley McDougald and Gorniak led the way and finished 18 points.
Tim Brady had 14 for the Celtics, who were limited to single
digits in all but the third quarter, which Scioto won 20-18.
"The holidays are kind of a squirrely time and you never =
know
how you're going to come out," Jerome coach Joe Bline said. "It w=
as
especially tough for us going back-to-back days because we're not a real de=
ep
team. We've just got to get tougher."
Jerome's offensive execution the next day didn't look much bet=
ter
in a 61-41 loss to Coffman, which widened the score by winning the fourth
quarter 23-12.
Michael Green led four Shamrock players in double figures with=
14
points and Steve Gardiner finished with 13.
Coffman outscored Jerome 38-22 in the second half.
"We just haven't figured it all out yet," Collins sa=
id.
"We've figured it out for quarters and for halves, but we
haven't figured it out for a whole game yet."
Scioto hopes the lopsided victories over rivals will only help=
its
standing as one of the teams to beat in central Ohio.
Some believe the Irish play in a weak OCC-Capital Division, in
which it won't be tested.
"We've been trying to beef up the non-league schedule,&qu=
ot;
Bisutti said.
"With Jerome playing so well, I never expected that game =
to
go that way. Coffman is very sound and they're going to get better. They're
still trying to get in sync."
