Blair Gorniak knows better than to get sucked in by all the
attention he and the rest of his Dublin Scioto High School boys basketball
teammates have been getting in the hallways in between classes.
"Guys come up to me and say how we're going to blow a team
out," he said. "But we're not going out there with a mentality th=
at
we're going to dominate everybody. I wouldn't mind having a close game.&quo=
t;
Before playing last Tuesday against Westland, the Irish were 3=
-0
overall and had been nothing but controlling in their first three contests,
winning by an average margin of 35 points.
Scioto led 55-5 at halftime last Friday before defeating Watki=
ns
Memorial 75-25. It opened Nov. 30 with a 74-37 victory over Franklin Height=
s.
Worthington Kilbourne was more of a test, although the Irish --
who hadn't played in 11 days -- pulled away in the second half for a 66-49 =
win
Dec. 11 after leading by 12 points at halftime.
"I've kind of referred back to last year and I've told th=
em
tougher opponents on the schedule are coming up," coach Tony Bisutti s=
aid.
"We can't do anything about who we play in the division. All we can do=
is
go out and dominate if we're supposed to dominate."
Scioto a year ago breezed through the OCC-Capital Division
schedule to finish at 10-0 and opened with 15 consecutive victories before
falling to Mount Vernon 54-52. The only other loss as it finished 20-2 over=
all
was to eighth-seeded Upper Arlington 53-47 in a Division I district semifin=
al.
Another resemblance to last season has been Scioto's pressure
defense, which is creating a number of turnovers and points at the other en=
d.
The Irish forced nearly 20 turnovers against Kilbourne.
"We like to play up in everyone's face," Gorniak sai=
d.
"We've really been playing well defensively and as a team. Nobody's
selfish."
Scioto on Friday meets Olentangy Liberty, which ran its record=
to
3-3 overall and 3-0 in the league with a 72-49 victory over Franklin Heights
last Friday. Dustin Welch and Tommy Waterwash scored 12 points to lead the
Patriots.
"They've got some guys back because they were young last
year," Bisutti said. "They've graduated their two best front line
kids, but everybody else is back. They'll want to play up-tempo and so do w=
e.
This whole week we'll probably be like that because we've got Independence
Saturday."
· Girls coach Todd
Hardesty sees the game Friday at Liberty as a benchmark for a team that
improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the league with a 73-36 win last Friday =
over
Watkins Memorial.
The Patriots ran their record to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the le=
ague
with a 65-43 victory against Franklin Heights last Friday.
"I don't know that this is a must win for us," he sa=
id.
"As balanced as this league is right now, mathematically, two losses w=
ould
be OK. But we've now put together five in a row and really sustained our ef=
fort
at both ends of the floor. This game really starts a tough stretch of four
games."
Liberty boasts a lineup that features six returning letterwinn=
ers,
led by junior forward and center Cassie Swafford (second-team all-OCC) and
senior forward and center Jenna Dougherty (honorable mention all-OCC).
