At a glanceBelow are the recent results and coming schedule for the Sci=
oto
boys basketball team: *Last Friday -- Defeated New Albany 46-38. Bradley McDougald
scored 23 points. Saturday -- At Centerburg vs. Westland or Central Crossing in
second round of Division I district tournament (6:15 p.m.). The winner wi=
ll
play Reynoldsburg, Mount Vernon, Dresden Tri-Valley or Marysville in a
district semifinal Feb. 23 in the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Of note: The Irish are 19-1 overall and finished 10-0 in the
OCC-Capital ahead of New Albany (7-3), Olentangy Liberty (6-4), Big Walnut
(5-5), Franklin Heights (1-9) and Watkins Memorial (1-9). *OCC-Capital game |
Dublin Scioto High School boys basketball coach Tony Bisutti n=
ever
has considered himself a soothsayer, but his decision to take a bye in the
Division I district tournament might make him look like Nostradamus right n=
ow.
The second-seeded Irish, who will face Central Crossing or
Westland at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Centerburg in the second round, have need=
ed
every day this week to heal. Last Monday, senior guard Ben Ashwill was wear=
ing
a boot on an injured foot and senior forward Blair Gorniak was nursing a so=
re
ankle.
"We're banged up so I guess not taking a first-round game=
looks
pretty good right now," Bisutti said. "Ben didn't play (last) Fri=
day
and I would say he's questionable. We'll just have to wait and see what the
week brings. Without those guys there are no guarantees."
But even without its offensive playmaker, Scioto pulled out a
46-38 victory at New Albany to clinch its second-consecutive OCC-Capital
Division title at 10-0 and end the regular season at 19-1 overall for the
second year in a row. The Irish have won 22 consecutive league games.
Junior guard Bradley McDougald filled the void left by Ashwill=
and
scored 23 points.
"It was pretty tough having to stand and watch," said
Ashwill, who suffered the injury during a 57-49 loss to Brookhaven on Feb. =
5.
"Hopefully, I'll be able to play on Saturday, but we've got some guys =
like
Bradley who have stepped up."
Much like last season, the road to the district championship
surely will test a Scioto team that some say hasn't be tested outside of its
meeting with fifth-seeded Brookhaven. A year ago, the Irish entered the tou=
rnament
as the third seed and fell to eighth-seeded Upper Arlington 53-47 after
trailing by 17 points at halftime.
"Quite honestly, I'm surprised more teams didn't come into
our bracket," Bisutti said. "Everybody knows our league isn't as
tough as some of the others and we're small in the post. That's the way peo=
ple
look at us. At this point, it's all about timing and waiting to see if
somebody's going to step up and take us to the next level."
Scioto has appeared in two district finals but never has won a
championship, losing to Mifflin 74-57 in 1997 and to Newark 50-38 in 2003).=
Central Crossing finished the regular season 10-10 and Westland
went 6-14.
The bracket also includes fourth-seeded Hilliard Darby and
Brookhaven, two teams the Irish could meet in a district final.
Possible district semifinals opponents include ninth-seeded
Dresden Tri-Valley and a Reynoldsburg team that has put together a string of
victories heading into the tournament by capturing the OCC-Buckeye champion=
ship
at 8-2 and finishing the regular season at 13-7 overall.
Tri-Valley edged Reynoldsburg 51-50 on Jan. 12.
"It could be pretty tough with Tri-Valley and Reynoldsbur= g in the semifinals and Hilliard Darby and Brookhaven up top," Ashwill said. "I know as a team we'd like to get another shot at Brookhaven." <= o:p>
