Irish Squeak Past Lions, Move On In Districts

A questionable foul on his team with two seconds left in a Division I district tournament game last night normally would have sent Dublin Scioto coach Tony Bisutti over the edge.

But after Kollin Hancock missed the second of two free throws, giving Scioto a 47-46 upset of eighth-seeded Gahanna, Bisutti was relieved.

"Let's just say it worked out," Bisutti said, winking. "Call it luck of the Irish if you want."

On Gahanna's final possession, Hancock took the inbounds with seven seconds remaining and raced down the sideline. Just as he reached the lane to the surprise of most in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum a foul was called on Zach Duzan.

"We talked about running a second guy at Hancock, but we didn't get the back side covered," Bisutti said. "When the whistle blew, it looked like a layup. In hindsight, I guess I'm glad they called a foul."

Hancock, who scored 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, made the first free throw. The second, after a timeout by Bisutti, rimmed out. Hancock went 4 of 9 from the line.

Gahanna coach Tony Staib declined to comment on the foul call or a third-quarter technical foul on Derek Miser that resulted in a five-point swing.

"Kollin Hancock is a magnificent player who I wouldn't want to put in that situation very often," Bisutti said.

Two three-point baskets by Kyle Rolf sparked an 11-0 fourth-quarter run that gave Scioto (14-8) a 44-37 lead with just 1:52 remaining.

Gahanna (16-5) used full- and half-court pressure to close to 46-45 on a three-pointer by Hancock with 49 seconds left.

L.J. Freeman made the second of two free throws with seven seconds left to put the Irish ahead by two.

"It was a roller coaster of emotions the last three or four minutes," said Scioto junior Clark Crum, who scored 23 points. "They probably had more talent than us, but we ran our game plan perfectly and we were playing with a lot of confidence."

Scioto outrebounded Gahanna 30-22.

"We sort of dug ourselves a hole with turnovers in the half-court," Staib said. "Our offensive execution was very poor tonight."
