IRISH GET BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN

The Irish used a fast start to build a 14-2 first quarter lead in defeating Athens by the score of 51-37.

The first three Irish baskets were scored by three different players, assisted by 3 different players. Raneal Ewing scored a 3 pointer, and Ryan Duncan and Justin Craig each added a 2 point basket, off of assists by Antonio Bisutti, Duncan and Craig. Six different Irish scored in the first quarter as Jalen Johnson and Travis Yates each added 2 points, and Antonio Bisutti had 1.

The Irish offense struggled in the second quarter as they scored 4 points, 2 by Bisutti and 2 by Duncan. The Duncan basket was scored off of a nice no look pass from Bisutti. Meanwhile Athens scored 8 to cut the lead to 18-10 at the half.

In the 3d quarter the Irish managed 16 points, but also allowed 14 and led 34-24 entering the final period. Ewing heated up hitting 2 threes in the quarter and scoring 8 points, while Craig added 4 and Johnson and Duncan 2 each.

In the final period, Craig proved deadly from the foul line hitting 7 out of 8 for the quarter to thwart off any comeback attempt Athens had. Joshua Ashwill added 4 in the quarter, while Bisutti, Ewing and Duncan added 2 each.

The Irish made significant improvements on the night from the foul line over recent games, hitting 16 out of 20, led by Craig who was 9 out of 10.

For the night, Ewing led the scoring with 15 points followed closely by Craig with 13. Duncan added 8, Bisutti 5, Johnson and Ashwill 4 each, and Yates 2. The Irish are now 3-4 on the year.

IRISH HOLD OFF LATE RALLY TO WIN

The Irish JV won for the second day in a row by defeating Athens by the score of 46-34.

The Irish seemed in control of this one from the beginning, holding leads of 14-8, 25-17 and 36-23 after each of the first three quarters. But Athens scored the first 11 points of the 4th quarter to close to 36-34 with 3:11 to go before the Irish scored their first 4th quarter points on a Braxton Wallace layup. The Irish then scored the final 8 points of the game, 2 on a basket by Darius McDonald off of an assist by Dominic Madision. Wallace then added 4 more in a 5 second span after making a basket, stealing the ball and then making another basket. Madison added 2 free throws to round out the scoring.

Ryan Gibson sparked the offense early with 10 first half points and a number of steals. Madison added 8 first half points.

For the night Madison finished with 19 points, followed by Wallace with 12, Gibson with 10, Darius McDonald and Jack Flood with 2 each, and Travis Yates with 1.

The Irish JV is now 4-3 on the year, including 2-2 in the conference.


FRESHMEN POST 41-14 WIN

Eight different players scored in a balanced attack that led the Irish freshmen to a 41-14 win at Athens.

The Irish had a quick start, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before Athens called time out with 4:27 to go. The teams traded baskets from there and Scioto led 11-4 after one quarter. Zac Brown scored 4 points in the quarter.

Scioto doubled its lead with another 11-4 quarter and took a 22-8 lead into the locker room after Kalib Wallace hit a transition trey with 1:13 to go. Jack Flood led the Irish with 4 points in the second quarter.

A pair of Darius McDonald lay-ups, one coming off a steal at midcourt, stretched the lead to 26-8 early in the third. McDonald had another bucket in the quarter and had a nice assist when he fed Andrew McKinley who hit a contested shot at the buzzer. The 12-2 quarter put the Irish ahead 34-10.

The Irish outscored Athens 7-4 in the final quarter with Evan Ekis, Jake Schafer and Spencer Talentino making baskets. Derek Scott provided energy on both ends of the floor in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Irish did a nice job in the half court and kept Athens from getting second chances on the offensive glass.

McDonald led all scorers with 10 points and Schafer chipped in 7. Other Irish scorers were: Flood (6), McKinley (5), Wallace (5), Brown (4), Ekis (2) and Talentino (2).
