Irish defeat Jackets By Joe Huddleston , News Sports Editor MOUNT VERNON ̵=
2;
The Dublin Scioto High School boys basketball team rolled into Mount Vern=
on
on Friday night undefeated and hungry for another win. The Irish ended up
getting the victory over the Yellow Jackets, but not without a fierce
competition that lasted the entire second half. In the end, Dublin
Scioto was simply too much for the Jackets, winning the contest, 60-48. “Our guys pl=
ayed
hard, and that’s a credit to them,” said Mount Vernon coach K=
urt
Kaufman. “It came down to some little things that we didn’t d=
o.
Our effort was really good. We’ve got to keep that same effort and =
stay
positive. Hopefully, we’ll turn the corner.” Mount Vernon (3-7)
never led in the contest, but managed to battle back from a 10-point half=
time
deficit in the third quarter. The Jackets pulled within three, 33-30 R=
12;
the closest they had been since halfway through the first quarter —
before the Irish went on a 14-4 run that spanned the third and fourth
quarters. A 17-of-18 effort at the free-throw line in the final quarter
sealed the Dublin Scioto win. Dublin Scioto came=
out
strong, capitalizing on three Mount Vernon turnovers to take an 11-5 lead
through the first six minutes of play, but a 5-3 Jacket spurt made it a 1=
4-10
game after one. A jumper by Russell Doup, who hit free throws to close the
first quarter, started the second quarter, but Mount Vernon had no answer=
for
the Irish’s Blair Gorniak. Gorniak had five
baskets in the quarter, including four off assists from Ben Ashwill, to h=
elp
his team open up a sizable advantage. The Jackets struggled to find any
offensive flow, and went into the locker room, trailing by 10. One problem for the
Jackets in the first half was foul trouble. Both starters Cuy Sheffield a=
nd
Joe Scott sat on the bench part of the first and the entire second quarte=
rs
after picking up two early fouls. That, combined with the turnovers,
attributed to some of the Mount Vernon offensive woes. “That hurt
us,” Kaufman said of the foul trouble. “Joe has been playing
really well for us. When that happened, we had other guys come in and step
up. Russell played really well. In one sense, it hurt us, but it also was=
a
credit to our guys. They didn’t give up.” Things looked posi=
tive
in the third quarter, when Dublin Scioto went cold shooting. Mount Vernon
stepped up its defensive pressure and pulled within three with a 9-2 run =
in
the first five-plus minutes. The Irish managed to score the final six poi=
nts
of the quarter in the last two minutes, and after getting two free throws=
to
open the fourth quarter, had reestablished their lead. “I thought we
could pressure them a little more than we did in the first half. I though=
t we
gave them some really easy baskets in the first half,” said Kaufman.
“We wanted to eliminate that. At one point, I think we had them pre=
tty
worried, but at the end of the game, they hit their shots.” A pair of Mount Ve=
rnon
baskets closed the gap to seven, 41-34, with just over six minutes left, =
but
a 14-8 spurt made it a 15-points game with a minute and a half left. Ashw=
ill
was the main culprit in the scoring, hitting 9-of 10 from the foul line d=
own
the stretch. A pair of 3s — one each by Doup and Ben Severns —
failed to allow Mount Vernon to close the gap considerably. Joe
Stuart’s layup with 35 seconds left capped off the 60-48 loss. Gorniak finished
8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 at the line for a career-high of 20 poin=
ts.
He also pulled down five boards. Ashwill had 14 points, five assists, four
rebounds and three steals; Marco St. John finished with 11 points, five
rebounds and three steals; and Bradley McDougald had eight points, five r=
ebounds,
two steals and two blocks. Doup led Mount Ver=
non
with 14 points before fouling out. Stuart had 11 points, five rebounds, t=
hree
assist and the team’s only steal; Sheffield had eight points; and
Severns finished with six points. The junior varsity=
Yellow
Jackets improved to 8-2 with a 49-32 victory. Mount Vernon, which trailed=
at
halftime, 23-21, limited the Irish to just nine second-half points, inclu=
ding
no field goals in the final quarter. Ben Hoar led the team effort with 11
points. Andre Nixon scored eight points; Stephen Bien chipped in seven
points; and Tad Glibert and T.T. Crouch scored six points apiece. I hope we can learn
from this. Our guys are so close; they don’t realize how close they
are,” said Kaufman. “We’ve been in every one of our los=
ses.
It is just a matter of turning that corner; it’s a matter of a play
here or play there; it’s a matter of a shot falling here and there.
Once that starts happening, these guys are going to get some
confidence.” Mount Vernon is ba=
ck
in action tonight as it hosts Marion Harding. The Presidents come to
“The Hive” for a 6 p.m. start. |
