 Irish Preview 08-09

2008-09 DUBLIN SCIOTO IRISH BOYS BASKETBALL

The winter of 2007-08 was a banner season for the Dublin Scioto Irish Boys Basketball Team. The Irish roundballers finished 22-2 overall, 10-0 in the OCC Capital and captured the coveted Central District Championship in the big school division.

All-district performers Ben Ashwill, Blair Gorniak and fellow senior Kyle Duncan (Honorable Mention All OCC) have all graduated. However with eight players returning from last year’s squad, the 2008-09 campaign once again arrives with high expectations for the Irish faithful.

With the realignment of the OCC, Scioto re-enters the Cardinal Division with 21 consecutive wins in conference play. Leading the way for the Irish will be returning senior starters Bradley McDougald (6’2/14.0 ppg/1st Team OCC), Marco St. John (6’3/8.9 ppg/2nd Team OCC) and captain David McKinley (5’9/4.6 ppg).

Others who saw considerable action last season are seniors Rainer Duzan (5’11/2.7 ppg), Deji Olatoye (6’2 /1.6 ppg) and Eric Stamets 6’0/2.0 ppg). Senior transfer Tyler Harrell (6’4) will certainly see ample time. Moving up from the JV team and expecting to make an impact is 6’0 senior Destin Thomas and 6’6 sophomore Jamare Mills. Rounding out the squad is 5’11 senior newcomer Jason Reineck.

On paper, this team is as well-rounded with basketball skill and athletic ability as any of Scioto’s great teams of the past. The Irish now have a luxury of going to a low post presence with size, while also being able to take advantage of smaller and quicker lineup if need be.

The biggest question mark this team faces is who will step up and provide the leadership that is necessary for any championship organization. Coach Bisutti states "This team has tremendous potential but we need to understand that doesn’t guarantee success. A wise man once said, potential can be the heaviest burden a man can carry. Our staff looks forward to developing this team over the winter months with the hopes of cultivating that potential and peaking at the right time. We ask our fans to enjoy the process, and we appreciate your support. See you at a game. Go Irish!"
