DUBLIN SCIOTO IRISH VS MOUNT VERNON YELLOW JACKETS
OUR QUEST........CONTINUES
IRISH FANS............
WOW! Yes, it is ok to be shocked, stunned and bewildered! Both you and thewebguy do not believe the IRISH were handed their first defeat of the season by the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets.
Sheryl Crow, Foreigner and Fleetwood Mac have some good music and words that the Varsity Team can take to heart as they prepare to take the court Friday night against Watkins Memorial.
Sheryl Crow's song First Cut Is The Deepest can be taken to heart. The Green & White's first loss hurt very much.
However, thewebguy did wake up this morning and realized that Foreigner was correct when they released the song, That Was Yesterday....."I had the world in my hands, But its not the end of the world, Just a slight change of plans..."
thewebguy challenges every player in the program to dig deeper; practice harder, develop a deeper sense of urgency to finish the season stronger as if this loss never occurred and if you want to listen to a great song, try Fleetwood Mac's-Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow...."If you wake up and don't smile, If it takes just a little while, Open your eyes and look at the day, You'll see things in a different way....."
Lets talk basketball.....................
Junior Varsity - Dublin Scioto vs Mount Vernon
The JV Basketball team is struggling to find the solution to right the ship. They continue to have mental lapses both offensively and defensively.
The IRISH could not get untracked on offense and were continually beaten down the court by the Yellow Jackets.
This group of boys need to ensure that they not only are ready to play the game, but also alter their "play" based upon the calls that the referee makes. Players make adjustments to their opponent that they are assigned. So too, players must pay attention to the style of the referee. Adjustments are part of the game.
thewebguy still believes that this team can right the direction that it has been on. They need to believe that they can win and they can win consistently. They need to play like winners and then they will become winners! You've got to believe in yourselves because there are a lot of IRISH fans in the stands every game who believe in each one of you!
Brandon Brown led the IRISH with 8 points. Destin Thomas added 6 points.
The Junior Varsity team is 2-14 on the year and 1-6 in OCC Capital Division play.
The JV's will play an away game against Watkins Memorial High School on February 2, 2007.
The final score of the JV game was Mount Vernon 48 and Dublin Scioto 21.
Varsity Game - Dublin Scioto vs Mount Vernon
The IRISH ran into a "Princeton Offense" buzz saw at Mount Vernon on Saturday night!
thewebguy thought that the IRISH execution of its offense in the first quarter was very good, however, he did not count on near perfection of the Yellow Jackets.
Last year, thewebguy analyzed and reported to you on the "Princeton Offense" employed by the Yellow Jackets. He cannot refer you to the article because "alas poor Yorick" (Hamlet) thewebguy did not save the story!
This year, the Mount Vernon team not only executed the passing of the offense, but they also shot the lights out from 3 point range!
Everytime the IRISH answered a score of the Yellow Jackets, here came another three point basket!
Kelly Winter led the IRISH in the first quarter. Kelly attacked the basket for three lay ups and went one for two from the charity stripe!
Ashwill, Lolli, O'Connell and Mooney added single baskets while Marco StJohn went one for two from the foul line as the IRISH were down by three points 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The Green & White continued to have problems stopping the Princenton Offense in the second quarter and were unable to convert on their offensive sets consistently. The Yellow Jackets opened their biggest lead at 7 points as the IRISH again were shut down by a stingy defense.
thewebguy was wondering when the 5-7 team was going to show up. The Yellow Jackets were playing the game of their life!
The IRISH came to life in the second half as they fought back from the 7 point deficit behind the hot shooting of Austin O'Connell who scored 8 points in the 3rd quarter. Michael Eubank hit a big three point play and the IRISH were back in the game trailing by one point, 42-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Kelly Winter brought the crowd to its feet at the start of the 4th quarter when he drained a 3 point shot from the top of the key and the IRISH were on top for the first time in the game. The IRISH increased the lead to 46-42 on a basket by Kevin Lolli.
A timeout by the Yellow Jackets coach allowed his team to regroup and come back and tie the game up.
The Princeton Offense is a beautiful style of basketball to watch when it is executed correctly. That is what the Yellow Jackets did tonight. In the first three quarters, they drove into the center of the lane and passed the ball out to the wings. There, sophomore, Ben Severns and senior, Tony Tear did the most damage hitting seven 3 point shots.
With the IRISH thinking that the player was going to pass the ball outside, they attempted to deny the passing lane. In the 4th quarter, Mount Vernon took the ball to the hoop. Great execution.
The IRISH did not give up and continued to play and were down by two points with 11 seconds to play.
Austin O'Connell took a short jump shot from the right side, the ball bounced around the rim, Kevin Lolli grabbed the rebound and put up a second shot that again bounced off the rim twice and finally, Michael Eubanks tip did not fall through the net!
WOW, what an ending! The IRISH fought to the last second! thewebguy does not like to come up on the short end of the score, however, this game was outstanding! The IRISH had three players who wanted the ball and who demonstrated the confidence that they could lead the team back from defeat!
Foreigner........."That was yesterday, But life goes on. You won't find me in yesterday's world. Now yesterday's gone,,,
Fleetwood Mac......."I know you don't believe that its true........Don't stop thinking about tomorrow, Don't stop, it'll soon be here. It'll be better than before. Yesterday's gone........
The IRISH were led by Austin O'Connell with 18 points; Kelly Winter scored 12 points and Kevin Lolli had 6 points while Michael Eubank followed up with 5 points.
The final score was Mount Vernon 54 and Dublin Scioto 52.
The IRISH are 15 and 1 overall and 7-0 in the OCC - Capital Division.
Dublin Scioto travels to Watkins Memorial for a league game with the Warriors on Friday, February 2, 2007. The Freshman game time is 4:30 PM, Junior Varsity game time is 6:00 PM and the Varsity will start around 7:30 PM
