Scioto boys top city rivals, remain undefeated

Undefeated and flying high, the Dublin Scioto boys basketball team (8-0. 3-0 OCC Capital) was crowned king of Dublin after the Irish completed a sweep of their city neighbors.

Wednesday, Scioto bested host Dublin Coffman 67-54 thanks to 14 points from Ben Ashwill and 13 apiece from Austin O'Connell and Kevin Lolli. Kelly Winter chipped in 10 from the backcourt.

Just 24 hours later, coach Tony Bisuti and his charges dismissed visiting Dublin Jerome 53-40 behind 14 points from Lolli. O'Connell added 10.

The Dublin Coffman boys basketball team rebounded from the Scioto defeat by thoroughly dominating host Dublin Jerome Friday.

It wasn't the most suspenseful way to end the series of games among the three crosstown rivals. The 60-28 win for the Shamrocks (5-2) made for a frustrating pair of nights for Jerome.

Jerome, like Scioto, had to play on back-to-back nights in the series of crosstown clashes. "If we want to make excuses, we can," Celtics coach Kevin Alkire said. "It was a good experience for these kids. A lot of these kids haven't played back-to-back nights.

"This is our first time playing back-to-back, and it was against two very good teams. But if you look at our schedule there's no easy games.

"If you don't come ready to play, that's what happens. You get your butt beat by 32 points, and it could have been worse."

It was Coffman's night.

"I thought our guys played really well defensively," 'Rocks coach Jamey Collins said. "Early on in the game we moved the basketball. Adam Pennell (12 points) had six assists in the first half. Adam really set the tone for us.

"Defensively, Mike Bohan (14 points) really did a good job on their real good player, Kyle Ferguson."

Ferguson scored 12, but most of the points came in the final period, which began with Coffman ahead by 25. A pattern in Jerome's losses this season has been poor shooting. It was 12 of 33 against Coffman.

"I give 100 percent credit to Coffman," Alkire said. "Their defense didn't give us many good shots. It's probably a little bit mental.

"Scioto's kids missed a lot of shots against us, because they played back-to-back nights."

Still Alkire came back to how well Coffman did against his team.

"Their kids played physical and pushed us around, which is evident from the offensive rebounds they got," he said.

Jeff Cannan added 12 for Coffman against Jerome in a game played before a packed house.

"We've been fortunate," Collins said. "Our student section has been great all year. This has been a normal type of game for us, home or away.

"We've had a couple of away games that felt like home games. Our students just get really enthusiastic about supporting our guys."

Alkire said the scheduling gave Scioto more of a break before it was to play Tuesday against visiting Watterson. The other two Dublin teams don't resume games until Friday.

"We play a lot of Friday and Saturday games," Collins said. "You never know how you're going to play that second night. When you play two teams that are different styles that changes things a little bit, too."

The 'Rocks host Reynoldsburg Friday (7:30 p.m.). Gahanna Lincoln invades Saturday (7:30 p.m.).

"We were really frustrated with the way that game went," Collins said. "We have to give all the credit to Scioto. Practice wasn't a fun time the next day. And these guys did a great job, listening to what we said."

Jerome hosts Worthington Kilbourne at 7:30 p.m. Friday before a trip to Grove City Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).

Getting back to business in the New Year, the Irish travel to Olentangy Liberty for a league showdown Friday (7:30 p.m.) before a non-league venture to St. Charles Tuesday
