Scioto girls crush outmatched Franklin Heights

One significant single-game program record fell by the wayside for the Dublin Scioto girls basketball team in a recent Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division contest.

Hosting Franklin Heights Friday, the Irish (4-0, 2-0 OCC Capital) obliterated the previous scoring record by over 20 points in a 93-16 dismantling of the Falcons.

Although Irish coach Todd Hardesty allowed that it was an obvious mismatch, he felt that progress was made at both ends of the floor after a couple of lackluster outings.

"We made some major strides and become more patient and opportunistic with the basketball," Hardesty said. "We got out in transition, but also executed in half-court sets, reversed the ball and hit our open looks."

Scioto accounted for at least 20 points in each quarter, holding the Falcons to single digits in each frame.

Six Irish players reached double figures, led by Hannah Coughlin with a game-high 14 points. Also in that grouping were Brandi Gorniak (13), Christine Simpson and Kesi Hess (12 each), Aimee Cummins (11) and Chelsea Albert (10).

An intriguing non-league matchup will pit the Irish against visiting Mansfield St. Peters today at 7:45 p.m. Hardesty, for his part, is concerned about what the small-school power can bring to the table.

"They are a solid team all around," Hardesty said. "This is a team that has actively beefed up their schedule because they have lofty dreams in Division IV."

Afterward, Scioto will have a pivotal early league showdown at Big Walnut at 7:45 p.m. on Friday.

"This will be an important battle in the league for both clubs," Hardesty said. "They have some playmakers that we have to have an answer for over there."

Tuesday, another league tussle will take place between the Irish and host Watkins Memorial. Tip time is set for 7:45 p.m.

Not to be outdone, the Irish (3-0, 1-0) are flying high after an unbeaten start to the campaign.

Coach Tony Bisutti and his club won back-to-back games over the weekend. Friday, the Irish bested Franklin Heights 72-34 on the road behind a game-high 14 points from Austin O'Connell.

Less than 24 hours later, Hard Road neighbor Worthington Kilbourne was dispatched 47-34 at the friendly confines. Scioto was led by Kelly Winter with a game-high 14 points.

Friday, the Irish entertain Big Walnut at 7:45 p.m. before taking on invading Watkins Memorial at the same time
